INTRODUCTION TO MICROSOFT POWERBI – 2025

Power BI Desktop is a free, self-service business analytics application from Microsoft that allows users to connect, transform, and visualize data. It is a powerful tool for data analysis and business intelligence, enabling users to create interactive and dynamic reports, dashboards, and visualizations.

  1. Navigate to your Microsoft store and search desktop power BI.

  1.  Download and install power BI Desktop.
  1. Go to your search bar and search for power BI and click “open”.
  1. Wait for a few seconds and the software will be up and running
  2. Close the UI because we will not be using it. We are not using Power Bi cloud.
  1. Go to your website and search for Kaggle, in order to download some dataset to work with in your power BI. For this session, we will be making use of the Latest Covi-19 India Statewise Data. Go ahead and click the download button.
  1. Go to your download, on your desktop and right click on the recently downloaded document (i.e from Kaggle website) and click on “extract all”.
  1. Go back to your power BI interface and click on “get data” at the top left of your power BI interface, and a drop down menu will appear, then click on “text csv”.
  1. Your downloaded dataset will then appear, then select and click on “open”.
  1. The dataset will display on your screen, then click on “transform data” at the button right of the dataset displayed.
  1. The transform data button will load the data into the query editor.
  1. At the top left of the query editor, click on “close and apply”.
  1. Click on “apply changes” and the data set will be loaded in to our model.
  1. The dataset table will appear at the right hand side.
  1. Try to visualize your dataset by clicking on any of the dataset into the selected chart of your choice by clicking on any of the chart and then dragging the columns of the dataset into the selected chart.
  1. You can make your visualization bolder by minimizing the filter, visualization, and field bar.
  1. You can now see your legend, states, etc
